Your Rights

Passengers departing from or arriving in New Zealand are allowed to purchase jewellery items tax and duty free, provided that they are for their own personal use and for no other purpose. The purchase must be conducted through a licensed duty free store. You may not buy on behalf of another, trade or exchange the goods after purchase to a third party, and the items must be completely fabricated rather than loose components such as gem stones. Any jeweller, trader or purchaser who enters into any arrangement to avoid duties and taxes may be deemed to be party to conspiracy to commit customs fraud and any goods purchased thereby may be forfeit. We encourage you to purchase your duty free jewellery under the protection of and in compliance with the Customs Act, the Consumers Guarantees Act, and from retailers under the auspices of the Retail Merchants Association and the Jewellers Association of New Zealand.
